About Balikpapan

Mostly surrounded by sea, Balikpapan is the second largest city in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, and an important centre of the petroleum, mining, and timber industries.
Many diverse people live in this peaceful city-foreigners and Bugis, Javanese, and Dayaks.
In Samarinda ( 3 hour's drive from Balikpapan) is the traditional Dayak village where the Dayak still cling to their folkore and traditional cultrure, making Balikpapan an interesting blend of modern day sophistication interposed with age-old charm and traditions.


Climate : Tropical climate, hot and wet season. Wet season (October to April), dry season (May to September).

Best time to go : Dry season between May to September althouth travel in the wet season is possible.

Flavour : Seafood, spicy nasi padang (rice eaten with meat and vegetable dishes),.

Activities : Diving and snorkelling (Berau), jungle trekking, visit to Dayak cultural village, cruise on Mahakam River, shopping for local handicraft.
